The West reacted slowly, but decisively, and the Islamic State is now crumbling under the assaults of the US-led coalition; the rise of Kurdish militias in Iraq and Syria; a reconstructed Iraqi army; and Russia's intervention in Syria to save the Assad regime. "And right now, I can't prove it otherwise", Mattis told reporters.

Mr Talabany added it would be difficult to know which Al-Baghdadi aides were still alive, but he believed most of them were somewhere south of Raqqa. The US-led coalition said at the time it could not confirm whether the Russian strike had killed Baghdadi.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights told Reuters on Tuesday that it had "confirmed information" that Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has been killed.

"A cultural battle has to be waged to wipe out the group's terrorist school of thought", he said".

Baghdadi, the undisputed leader of global jihadism, has been rumoured wounded or killed a number of times in the past. "The younger generation is always more dangerous". He is not dead.

Deir Ezzor, in eastern Syria, remains largely under IS control but the group has rapidly lost territory elsewhere in Syria and in neighbouring Iraq.

Since 2014, rumors and information on the death of the head of the organization in jihadist were regularly circulated. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi also traveled to the region to congratulate troops on their victory.

To understand how ISIS may respond to its leader's death, consider how the group has previously responded to setbacks.

The body temperature goes up activating the sweat glands which, in turn, release moisture to cool down the body.

IS destroyed the highly symbolic site before Iraqi forces could reach it as they pushed the militants' group from Mosul.

In the first few seconds of the marathon, the muscles start using up ATP (adenosine triphosphate) - the energy molecules that the body gets from food.

While there's much to celebrate in the fall of Mosul, we also need to steel ourselves for the road ahead.

According to a Reuters report, a top counter-terror official Lahur Talabany said, "Baghdadi is definitely alive. I don't have proof of life", Townsend said.

"These are the people in line", he said.

But over a month after the announcement Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia still had "no more precise information" on Baghdadi's fate.

It is surrounded by a large sweep of desert terrain and is another of the locations where the Islamic State is thought to have relocated many of its leading commanders.

Thousands of volunteers flocked into Iraq and Syria from around the world to become "Jund al-Khilafa", or soldiers of the caliphate. No doubt they will easily find a home within those organizations and do their utmost to intensify their terrorist operation to demonstrate that they are not abandoning their goal.
