"Because this is a really exciting time, and Doctor Who represents everything that's exciting about change".

John Boyega, Riz Ahmed and Karen Gillan were among the other stars congratulating Jodie Whittaker on her Doctor Who casting.

"I always knew I wanted the Thirteenth Doctor to be a woman and we're thrilled to have secured our number one choice", Chibnall says. No one wants to talk about Doctor Who not being good anymore, so at least now they can talk about how diverse it is. The twin necessities of hilarity and dramatic prowess are a must for such a role - traits Whittaker has in spades.

Whittaker getting the role of the new Doctor is a big deal considering the series long history of sticking with male actors that take on the role of the titular Time Lord. Doctor Who has always been inclusive and always incorporated strong female characters within the narrative of the show, and in series 8 of the show, one of the Doctor's arch nemesis and rivals, The Master who also was traditionally portrayed as male was given to a female actress, Michelle Gomez, and went by the name Missy or The Mistress.

There are the official incarnations of The Doctor: William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi. With the brilliant acting talent of Peter Capaldi and the wonderfully written speeches he is given, any time the Twelfth Doctor gets a monologue you sit straight and pay attention to the subtleties and the occasional verbal pyrotechnics that are produced. The moment of the mugging soon turns into something far more unusual, when, low and behold, aliens descend upon South London. His costumes From the sharp dark suit of Series 8 to the patched trousers and hoodies of Series 9, right through to the red velvet jacket and beyond, the Twelfth Doctor is a man of ever-changing outfits - all of them stylish and cool. "She saw her with the blonde hair and genuinely thought it was her mum!" It shouldn't be enough that we have one white woman in the leading role.

But the role that launched Whittaker into widespread critical acclaim came in 2013, portraying Beth Latimer in the ITV drama Broadchurch.

"That's what a former football manager said, he didn't know me so didn't know that I'd played football for years". I am, however, an out and proud fan of Capaldi's shades. Anna (Whittaker) lives in her mum's shed, rapidly nearing her 30th birthday with no idea what she's doing. They've been commented upon by many a character, and have been employed to convey a sense of terrible anger from the ancient Time Lord. Anna spends her days making films with her thumbs and generally lamenting the state of her life - giving Whittaker a chance to appropriately flex her funny bone.
